Fultondale is a city in Jefferson County, Alabama, situated within the Birmingham metropolitan area. The 2010 United States Census reported a population of 8,380 residents in Fultondale.
In 1947, Fulton, a mining town, was incorporated and renamed Fultondale, combining "Fulton Springs" and "Glendale".
The first phase of the Colonial Promenade Fultondale, a retail development project by Colonial Properties, opened in the fall of 2007, featuring a mix of large and small retailers, shops, and restaurants.

The 2010 census reported that Fultondale had a population density of 681.3 inhabitants per square mile. The racial makeup was 75.1% White, 16.6% Black or African American, 0.4% Native American, 1.0% Asian, 4.6% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races. 10.8% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
On May 24, 2012, Advance Publications, the parent company of several Alabama newspapers, revealed plans to discontinue the Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday print editions of its Birmingham, Mobile, and Huntsville publications.
On October 1, 2012, Advance Publications implemented changes to its Alabama newspaper operations, reducing print publication and emphasizing its website, al.com. This shift made Birmingham one of the largest U.S. cities without a daily newspaper.
On June 20, 2016, the interchange connecting Interstate 65 and Interstate 22, located south of Fultondale, was officially opened.
In August 2016, Jim Lowery secured a narrow victory in the mayoral election against Larry Holcomb, a former Fultondale fireman. This win marked the beginning of Lowery's sixth four-year term as mayor.
On August 26, 2020, Larry Holcomb won the Fultondale mayoral election, defeating incumbent Jim Lowery. The election also saw three other incumbent officials unseated: Kristi Jennings defeated Joe Bolton, Timothy McWilliams won against Tommy Loden, and Billy Hughes defeated Darrell Bates.
In 2020, plans were announced for the construction of a new Fultondale High School building. Following the completion of the new building, the current high school will house the Jefferson County International Baccalaureate School.
The 2020 United States Census recorded Fultondale's population at 9,876 people, with 3,879 households, and 2,393 families residing in the city.
On January 25, 2021, an EF3 tornado struck Fultondale, causing significant damage to structures, vehicles, and businesses. The tornado resulted in one fatality and 30 injuries.
