The Golden Spikes Award is an annual honor given to the top amateur baseball player in the United States. Created by USA Baseball in 1978 and sponsored by the Major League Baseball Players Association, it recognizes a player demonstrating outstanding on-field talent and commendable sportsmanship. Alongside the Dick Howser Trophy, the Golden Spikes Award is regarded as the highest accolade in amateur baseball.

1978: Bob Horner Wins Inaugural Award

In 1978, Bob Horner became the inaugural winner of the Golden Spikes Award and was also the first overall MLB draft pick. He also won the Rookie of the Year Award in the same year.

1978: Golden Spikes Award First Presented

In 1978, USA Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association created and presented the first Golden Spikes Award to the best amateur baseball player in the United States.

2014: Award Announcement on ESPN's SportsCenter

Since 2014, the winner of the Golden Spikes Award has been announced annually during a live broadcast of ESPN's "SportsCenter". After the announcement, the winner and finalists are honored at a banquet in Los Angeles.
