In 2003, Platner enlisted in the Marine Corps after graduating high school and attended the Marine Corps School of Infantry.
In 2005, Platner deployed to Iraq, serving in areas including Ramadi and Fallujah.
In 2018, while on leave from Afghanistan, Platner spent time farming oysters. Later that year, after resigning as a security contractor and returning to Maine, he began working at the farm full-time.
In 2020, Platner took over Waukeag Neck Oyster Co. and now owns and operates it with his wife and a business partner.
In the autumn of 2024, Platner married Amy Gertner, who later became the business manager for Waukeag Neck Oyster Co.
On August 19, 2025, Platner launched his Senate campaign with a video highlighting his military and working-class credentials.
By September 2025, Platner's campaign reported over 6,000 volunteers had joined since his August candidacy announcement. His volunteer network canvassed against Maine's Question 1, a 2025 ballot measure.
In October 2025, news outlets reported on Reddit posts Platner made between 2013 and 2021 in which he made controversial statements.
In November 2025, Ben Chin was hired as the new campaign manager. This occurred after several high-level staffers left Platner's campaign, with Genevieve McDonald resigning on October 17, Kevin Brown resigning on October 27, and Ronald Holmes resigning on October 31.
In December 2025, during an interview with The New Yorker, Platner declined to call himself a socialist, describing his political involvement before his campaign as organizing around local economic and social justice issues.
In January 2026, Platner and his wife announced that they would try for a child using in vitro fertilization in Norway.
In 2026, Platner opposed the 2026 Iran war, describing it as a "horrific war of choice", and criticized Senator John Fetterman for backing it.
In 2026, Politico described Platner as someone who "embodies a quarter-century of raw American frustration", and The Washington Post described his candidacy as one of several "rugged guy" campaigns in the 2026 midterms.
