An ice cube is a small, typically rectangular/trapezoidal piece of ice created through mechanical refrigeration. They are also industrially produced and sold commercially for widespread use.

1928: Copeman's rubber boot observation

In 1928, Lloyd Groff Copeman noticed that ice and slush flaked off his rubber boots while collecting maple syrup, inspiring him to later invent a rubber ice tray.

1933: Invention of flexible metal ice cube tray

In 1933, Guy L. Tinkham, a household product executive, invented the first flexible, stainless steel, all-metal ice cube tray that bent sideways for ice cube removal.

1978: Patent of the single-use ice cube bag

In 1978, Danish inventor Erling Vangedal-Nielsen patented the single-use ice cube bag after needing more ice than ice cube trays could provide at a gathering with friends.
