Jefferson City, known informally as Jeff City, is the capital of Missouri. As of the 2020 census, its population was 43,228, making it the 16th largest city in the state and the 9th smallest U.S. state capital. It serves as the county seat of Cole County and is the primary city within the Jefferson City Metropolitan Statistical Area, the second-most populous metro area in Mid-Missouri. Jefferson City is part of the larger Columbia–Jefferson City–Moberly combined statistical area, encompassing nine counties and a population of 415,747. While most of the city is in Cole County, a small portion extends into Callaway County.
