John Carlson is an American professional ice hockey defenseman currently playing for the Anaheim Ducks in the NHL. Drafted by the Washington Capitals in 2008, he spent time in the USHL, OHL, and AHL before solidifying his role in the NHL. Carlson also represented the United States in international competitions, including the World Juniors and Winter Olympics. A significant highlight of his career includes winning the Stanley Cup with the Capitals in 2018, where he stood out as the highest-scoring defenseman during the playoffs.

In 2008, John Carlson was drafted by the London Knights in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) draft and chose them over playing college hockey for the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Before the 2008 NHL entry draft, Carlson signed an OHL contract with the Knights.
In 2008, John Carlson was drafted by the Washington Capitals in the first round, 27th overall, after playing for the Indiana Ice in the USHL.
On October 17, 2009, John Carlson scored his first AHL regular season goal against the Binghamton Senators.
On November 20, 2009, John Carlson made his NHL debut with the Washington Capitals against the Montreal Canadiens, becoming the youngest player to debut with the Capitals since Alexander Semin in 2003–04.
In 2009, John Carlson signed an entry-level contract with the Capitals. He was named OHL Rookie of the Month for December and OHL's Defenceman of the Month for January. He was also selected to participate in the 2009 OHL All-Star Classic and finished the regular season with 16 goals and 60 assists. He was recognized by the Knights as player of the year, play-off performer, best defenseman, rookie of the year, and most valuable player. The OHL also selected him for the OHL Second All-Star Team, OHL First All-Rookie Team, and the CHL All-Rookie team.
In 2009, after the Knights were eliminated from the playoffs, John Carlson was reassigned to the Hershey Bears for the Calder Cup playoffs run. He scored his first professional goal and finished the playoffs with three points, contributing to the Hershey Bears' Calder Cup championship.
On January 5, 2010, John Carlson scored the game-winning goal in overtime of the gold medal game as part of a two-goal effort to defeat Canada junior team 6–5 in the 2010 World Junior Championships.
On March 25, 2010, John Carlson scored his first career NHL goal against the Carolina Hurricanes.
In December 2010, John Carlson was named to NHL.com's All-Time World Junior Championship team.

In 2011, John Carlson played with Karl Alzner and began to earn more on-ice responsibilities. He tied a franchise record for most points by a rookie defenseman in a single season with seven goals and 30 assists. Despite a hip injury, he played in the playoffs, where the Capitals were eventually swept by the Tampa Bay Lightning.
In 2012, John Carlson signed a six-year, $23.8 million contract extension with the Capitals the day before the start of the 2012–13 NHL lockout.
In January 2013, the NHL lockout officially ended, and John Carlson and his teammates were able to resume practicing in their team's facilities.
On February 15, 2013, John Carlson recorded an assist in his 200th career NHL game, helping the Capitals win 4–3 over the Tampa Bay Lightning.
On November 2, 2013, John Carlson scored his 100th NHL point, which was also his first goal of the season, against the Florida Panthers.
By November 27, 2013, John Carlson had added five goals and four assists over 12 games while averaging a career-high 23:53 minutes of ice time.
