Paganism

Paganism, a term originating in the 4th century among early Christians, denoted people in the Roman Empire who practiced polytheism or religions other than Judaism. During the Roman era, individuals were classified as pagans either due to their rural and provincial background compared to the Christian population or because they were not "soldiers of Christ" (milites Christi). Other terms used by Christians for pagans included hellene, gentile, and heathen. Ritual sacrifice was a key aspect of ancient Greco-Roman religion and served as a marker distinguishing pagans from Christians. Paganism has generally been associated with rural or peasant religions.
