Reading Fire

The 2012 Reading Fire was a significant wildfire in Lassen Volcanic National Park and Lassen National Forest, Northern California, ignited by lightning on July 23. Initially managed for ecological benefits, a shift in weather patterns caused it to escape containment lines. The fire eventually consumed 28,079 acres, spreading partially outside the park. Despite burning for nearly a month and not being fully contained until August 22, 2012, no buildings were destroyed, and there were no fatalities or serious injuries. The fire's escape from its intended boundaries sparked criticism from the public and California politicians, who questioned the park officials' decision to allow the fire to burn unsuppressed after its initial detection.
