Samuel Hartman is an American football quarterback currently playing for the Washington Commanders in the NFL. Before turning pro, he had a successful college career. He played five seasons at Wake Forest, where he set numerous school records and became the ACC's all-time leader in passing touchdowns. In 2023, he played for Notre Dame before entering the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Commanders in 2024.
In 2018, during his senior season at Oceanside Collegiate Academy, Sam Hartman threw for 3,093 yards and 29 touchdowns, also rushing for nine scores. He was rated as a top pro-style passer and featured in the documentary series QB1: Beyond the Lights.
In 2019, Sam Hartman was the backup quarterback, seeing his first action against Louisville on October 12. He led three scoring drives in a close loss. He was named starter for the next game against Florida State, leading Wake Forest to victory. He also played in the Pinstripe Bowl against Michigan State.
In 2020, Sam Hartman regained a starting position, was named team captain, and played in all nine games. He had a notable performance against North Carolina with 429 passing yards and four touchdowns. He finished the season ranked 28th nationally with 2,224 passing yards. The NCAA ruled that the 2020-21 school year would not count against player eligibility due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2021, Sam Hartman led his team to an 8-0 start, the best in school history, reaching the ACC Championship game. Despite losing to Pitt where he threw 4 interceptions, he earned national honors after a game against Army with 458 passing yards and five touchdowns, receiving multiple player of the week awards. He set Wake Forest single-season records with 39 touchdown passes and 4,228 passing yards.
In 2022, Sam Hartman played 12 games, throwing for 3,701 yards and 38 touchdowns, earning second-team All-ACC honors. He led his team to an 8-5 record and won the Gasparilla Bowl, earning MVP honors. He received the Brian Piccolo Award for courage after overcoming Paget-Schroetter disease. He was a finalist for the Manning Award and Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and a semifinalist for the Davey O'Brien Award.
