The Sundance Film Festival, organized by the Sundance Institute, is the largest independent film festival in the United States. Held annually in Utah until 2026, it showcases new American and international independent films across various competitive and non-competitive sections, including dramatic, documentary, and short films. Many Sundance premieres have achieved Oscar nominations and wins. In March 2025, it was announced that the Festival will be moving to Boulder, Colorado for the 2027 edition.

2022: Premiere and Controversy of 'Jihad Rehab'

In 2022, the Sundance Film Festival hosted the world premiere of the documentary film 'Jihad Rehab' directed by Meg Smaker. The film garnered positive reviews but faced controversy due to its subject matter, leading to criticism and eventual disavowal by an executive producer. The festival director apologized for its inclusion, resulting in the film being virtually blacklisted.
