Vivian Mushahwar

Vivian K. Mushahwar is a highly accomplished Palestinian-Canadian biomedical engineer. She holds prestigious positions such as Canada Research Chair in Functional Restoration at the University of Alberta, and is recognized as a Fellow by both the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences and the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering.

2013: Establishment of Research Centers and Leadership Roles

In 2013, Vivian Mushahwar co-founded the Centre for Neural Interfaces and Rehabilitation Neuroscience to further her research in mobility challenges. She was also appointed director of the Sensory Motor Adaptive Rehabilitation Technology (SMART) Network, focusing on the development of advanced medical devices and rehabilitation strategies to improve functionality for individuals with neural injuries and diseases. Her research and academic achievements led to her appointment as a special advisor in Functional Electrical Stimulation Technologies at Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital.

October 2018: Appointment as Canada Research Chair and Recognition

In October 2018, Vivian Mushahwar was appointed a Canada Research Chair in Functional Restoration, supporting her research in restoring mobility for Canadians with spinal cord injuries. Alongside this role, she was recognized as a Killam Professor.
