Zamalek is an affluent district located on an island in Cairo, Egypt. Geologically part of the Nile River's west bank, it was separated by the Bahr al-A'ma canal in the 19th century. The northern portion of the island is primarily residential, while the southern two-thirds consist of sports grounds and public gardens. Zamalek is connected to the mainland via four bridges: Qasr El Nil Bridge, Galaa Bridge, 15 May Bridge, and 6th October Bridge.
In 1924, Prince Amr Ibrahim Palace was built and it is now the Museum of Islamic Ceramics.
In 1983, the official qism name for the entire island became Zamalek.
In 2017, a census counted 14,946 residents in the island's four shiakhas.
