This was the same day he shot and killed Minnesota Speaker of the House Melissa Hortman and her husband and shot at state senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette. However, officers were able to arrive at her home before he could carry out his attempt to assassinate Rest.

On June 16, 2025, it was revealed that Ann Rest was directly targeted by Vance Boelter, who was planning to assassinate her. He had parked near her home on June 14, 2025, but officers arrived before he could act.
