Clash Royale is a free-to-play, real-time strategy mobile game by Supercell, released globally on March 2, 2016. It blends elements of collectible card games, tower defense, and MOBAs. A spin-off from Clash of Clans, it achieved $1 billion in revenue in under a year and $2.5 billion within three years, demonstrating its significant financial success.
In February 2016, Clash Royale introduced the Legendary card rarity.
On February 16, 2016, Clash Royale was soft-launched on Android for the same countries as the iOS launch in the form of an Android application package.

In March 2017, the Legendary Arena in Clash Royale had leagues added, in which players played through nine different leagues above 5000 trophies ranging from Challenger I to Ultimate Champion.
In 2017, the Clash Royale Crown Championship saw the best players all over the world from North America, Asia, Latin America, Europe, and more compete. The first edition had over 28 million participants all over the world, becoming the world's largest Clash Royale event.
On April 25, 2018, Clan Wars were added to Clash Royale, separated into "Collection Day" and "War Day," where Clans battle to earn cards and trophies. Participants would build a battle deck using only the cards unlocked on Collection Day.
In December 2018, the Star Points feature was added to Clash Royale, allowing players to unlock special golden cosmetics for level 14 cards.
Clash Royale was part of an esport demonstration event during the 2018 Asian Games held in Indonesia.
The Clash Royale Crown Championship was discontinued in 2018 and replaced by the Clash Royale League.
On August 31, 2020, Clan Wars II was introduced to Clash Royale as a reworked version of its predecessor, featuring Training Days and Battle Days.
After the 2020 season, the format for the Clash Royale League was changed from a team competition to an individual competition.
In October 2021, Clash Royale added the Champion card rarity.
In the October 2021 update, Clash Royale changed Star Point availability to start from Level 7.
The 2021 World Finals for the Clash Royale League were held online.
In March 2022, Card Masteries were launched in Clash Royale, offering rewards for achieving specific milestones with cards in competitive matches. Statistics range from damage done to troops destroyed, and towers tapped. Badges display a player's progress.
In October 2022, Clash Royale updated its trophy reset system, removing the previous reset system in favor of a longer trophy road with more arenas, as well as a separate competitive gameplay mode called Path of Legends.
The 2022 World Finals were held in conjunction with the Clash of Clans World Championship in Helsinki, Finland, the location of Supercell headquarters.
In the June 2023 update, Clash Royale introduced Card Evolutions, adding a cyclical ability to cards, and Elite Levels, which added level 15 and Elite Wild Cards to the game.
In correspondence with Google Play Games' PC beta launch, Clash Royale soft-launched for PC on Canada, Chile and Singapore on October 10, 2023.
In December 2023, Tower Troops were announced for Clash Royale, introducing strategic differences for the smaller towers defending the King Tower.
Starting with the January 2024 season, new Tower Troops were periodically released in Clash Royale.
In June 2024, a limited-time game mode was added to Clash Royale featuring the Goblin Queen, who replaced the central King Tower, and has since been removed.
In November 2024, Clash Royale saw the addition of a limited-time ranked 2v2 game mode, allowing players to team up and compete against other teams. The game mode was later removed, but with hints from Supercell about a potential return.
In 2024, Supercell held Superfest, an event encompassing the Clash Royale World Finals and the Clash of Clans World Championship, with the addition of the Brawl Stars World Finals.
In February 2025, Supercell re-added the 2v2 game mode to Clash Royale for a limited time.
In March 2025, a limited ranked edition event called "Retro Royale" allowed players to play the original 2017 version of Clash Royale, featuring the initial 80 cards and excluding newer features. The event concluded on March 26.
As of April 2025, Clash Royale offers a total of 119 cards distributed across five levels of rarity.
