Deltopia, formerly Floatopia, is an annual social gathering in Isla Vista, California, near UCSB, initiated by students in 2004. Held the first weekend after UCSB's spring quarter begins, it primarily occurs along Del Playa Drive. Starting with a few hundred attendees, it grew significantly, attracting 20,000 to 25,000 participants, mainly college students, in later years.
In 2004, Deltopia, originally named Floatopia, began as a social event initiated by University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) students in Isla Vista, California. The event takes place annually on the first weekend after UCSB's spring quarter begins.
In 2004, UC Santa Barbara students started Floatopia in Isla Vista. Attendees gathered on flotation devices in the Pacific Ocean and on beaches near Del Playa Drive.
In 2007, Floatopia saw an increase in attendance, with an estimated 300 people participating, marking a rise from previous years.
In 2008, Floatopia experienced a significant increase in attendance, growing to approximately 4,000 attendees.
In April 2009, following Santa Barbara's Floatopia, Cal Poly students planned a spin-off event called "Slotopia" for May 2009 in Shell Beach, California.
In May 2009, plans for "Floatopia 2", a sequel to the original Floatopia, met with opposition from authorities, local students, and residents. The Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors implemented emergency ordinances, including a temporary alcohol ban, to prevent the event, leading to its cancellation.
In May 2009, the planned "Slotopia" event was cancelled due to pressure from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo and local police. Despite the cancellation, authorities staffed additional law enforcement to the area, but the event saw fewer people than a typical Saturday at the beach.
In November 2009, government officials made the temporary beach alcohol ban permanent following the success of restrictions that prevented 2009's Floatopia 2. Officials also considered restricting beach access to discourage Floatopia 2010.
In 2009, Floatopia attracted an estimated 12,000 participants, overwhelming local authorities and leading to environmental damage, legal issues, and medical emergencies.
In 2009, Floatopia was promoted through a Facebook event and attracted around 12,000 attendees to Isla Vista beaches, leading to chaos, medical emergencies, citations, and arrests. The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office described it as a public safety emergency and environmental crisis.
In 2010, attendees responded to restrictions by moving to Del Playa Drive and renaming the event "Deltopia." The event drew a smaller crowd, estimated at 8,000 attendees.
In 2011, a similar event to Floatopia started in Honolulu at Magic Island near Ala Moana Beach Park.
In 2012, Deltopia continued to grow, drawing an estimated 8,000 to 10,000 attendees, despite ongoing restrictions.
In 2012, the Honolulu Floatopia event was held at Kaimana Beach after a last-minute change by organizers.
In 2013, Deltopia's attendance increased to an estimated 15,000 to 18,000 attendees.
In 2013, organizers in Honolulu undertook a similar strategy.
In 2014, authorities arrested approximately 100 attendees at Deltopia. The event turned violent when some of the roughly 15,000 attendees protested the arrest of a partygoer by the University of California Santa Barbara Police.
In 2014, the Honolulu event held its March event and evolved as "Floatilla" around major holidays like Memorial Day and Independence Day.
The Deltopia movie, announced in July 2021, was based on the events of Deltopia 2014.
In 2016, the Honolulu Floatilla event made headlines for its environmental impact on two separate occasions.
In 2017, Honolulu continued to hold large Floatilla events.
In 2018, Honolulu continued to hold large Floatilla events.
In 2019, participation in the Honolulu Floatilla event waned.
In 2020, participation in the Honolulu Floatilla event waned.
In July 2021, Deadline Hollywood reported that a movie starring Luna Blaise and Madison Pettis, with Olivia Newton-John as executive producer, was in production, based on the Deltopia 2014 events.
In 2022, Deltopia returned after a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19 restrictions. Local authorities declared it a multi-casualty incident, resulting in multiple arrests and medical emergencies.
