Detroit Free Press Marathon

The Detroit Free Press Marathon, held annually since 1978, is a 26.219-mile race that uniquely spans two countries: the United States and Canada. Taking place every third Sunday in October in Detroit, Michigan, and Windsor, Ontario, its international course is notable for crossing both the Ambassador Bridge and the Detroit–Windsor Tunnel. A highlight of the race is its 'underwater international mile' within the Detroit–Windsor Tunnel, which runs beneath the Detroit River. Certified by USATF, the marathon serves as a Boston Marathon qualifying event.

1963: Motor City Marathon Started

In 1963, the Motor City Marathon, which was the predecessor to the Detroit Free Press Marathon, was inaugurated. The race featured multiple laps on Belle Isle.

1968: Last Thanksgiving Day Race

Until 1968, the Motor City Marathon race was held on Thanksgiving Day.

1978: Race Started in Windsor

From 1978 the race started in Windsor and finished in Detroit.

1978: Inaugural Detroit Free Press Marathon

In 1978, the Detroit Free Press Marathon, a 42.195-kilometre (26.219 mi) race, was established. It is held every third Sunday in October in Detroit, Michigan, United States, and Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

1998: Race Ended in Detroit

Until 1998 the Detroit Free Press Marathon race finished in Detroit.

2009: Record Number of Runners

In 2009, the Detroit Free Press Marathon had a record 19,326 runners.

2020: 2020 Race Canceled

In 2020, the in-person edition of the Detroit Free Press Marathon was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. Registrants were given options for refunds or deferrals.

2021: Options for 2020 Registrants

Registrants of the canceled 2020 race were given the option of running the race on their own courses, transferring their entry to 2021 or 2022, or obtaining a 50 percent refund.

2022: Options for 2020 Registrants

Registrants of the canceled 2020 race were given the option of running the race on their own courses, transferring their entry to 2021 or 2022, or obtaining a 50 percent refund.

2024: Married Couple Wins

In 2024, Andy Bowman and Sydney Devore, a married couple, won the male and female divisions of the Detroit Free Press Marathon.

2024: First Sell Out

In 2024, the Detroit Free Press Marathon sold out for the first time. Both the half marathon and full marathon reached capacity by July.

2025: Record Early Sell Out

In 2025, the Detroit Free Press Marathon sold out even more quickly, reaching capacity by early March.
