Eenadu is a major Telugu-language daily newspaper in India, primarily circulated in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Founded in 1974 by Ramoji Rao in Visakhapatnam, it has become a prominent force in Telugu journalism. Ramoji Rao served as its chief editor until 2020. The newspaper holds the distinction of being the most widely circulated Telugu daily in the region.
In August 1974, Ramoji Rao launched Eenadu from Visakhapatnam after his success with Priya Pickles and Margadarsi Chitfunds.
In 1974, Ramoji Rao founded Eenadu, a Telugu-language daily newspaper, in Visakhapatnam.
In 1975, Eenadu expanded to Hyderabad, dividing the city into target areas and providing free copies for a week to gain readership.
By 1976, Eenadu's circulation reached 48,000 and was admitted into the Audit Bureau of Circulations.
By 1978, Eenadu surpassed the circulation of Andhra Prabha.
In 1979, the newspaper expanded to include Sitara, a weekly film magazine, Vipula, a monthly magazine with short stories, Chatura, a monthly novel and Annadatha, a farmer's monthly.
Since its foundation in 1982, Eenadu has supported the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) due to Ramoji Rao's feelings towards the Congress government and his relationship with N. T. Rama Rao.
With the introduction of offset printing, photocomposing software and computers, Eenadu was able to launch editions in smaller towns like Tirupathi in 1982.
During the 1983 elections, Eenadu supported Rama Rao's campaign by publishing positive stories. This led to a massive increase in subscriptions, with Eenadu going from a circulation of 230,000 copies to 350,000.
By 1989, Eenadu expressed some concerns about Rama Rao's leadership, due to his continued loss of public support.
In 1989, Eenadu introduced district dailies (tabloid edition) to carry its presence not only into district towns but also taluka towns. These district dailies were based on market research asserting that heavy local content would generate new groups of readers and boost advertising revenue.
By 1995, Andhra Patrika and Udayam folded, leaving Eenadu with over seventy-five percent of the audited circulation of Telugu dailies.
In 2004, Margadarsi faced investigation for irregular financial practices.
In 2008, Sakshi was launched under Jagan Mohan Reddy's ownership as a counter to what his father claimed was biased news from TDP-supporting papers.
In 2017, the magazines Sitara, Vipula, Chatura and Annadatha stopped circulation due to lack of demand in favour of web content.
As per the 2018 report of Media Ownership Monitor, Ramoji Rao and family own 97.56% stake in Ushodaya Enterprises.
For Q2 2019, Eenadu ranks eighth among the most circulated Indian-language dailies with a circulation of 1,614,105.
In 2020, Ramoji Rao served as the chief editor of Eenadu until 2020.
