Eenadu

Eenadu is a major Telugu-language daily newspaper in India, primarily circulated in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Founded in 1974 by Ramoji Rao in Visakhapatnam, it has become a prominent force in Telugu journalism. Ramoji Rao served as its chief editor until 2020. The newspaper holds the distinction of being the most widely circulated Telugu daily in the region.

August 1974: Eenadu Launched

In August 1974, Ramoji Rao launched Eenadu from Visakhapatnam after his success with Priya Pickles and Margadarsi Chitfunds.

1975: Expanded to Hyderabad

In 1975, Eenadu expanded to Hyderabad, dividing the city into target areas and providing free copies for a week to gain readership.

By 1976, Eenadu's circulation reached 48,000 and was admitted into the Audit Bureau of Circulations.

1978: Eenadu Surpasses Andhra Prabha's Circulation

By 1978, Eenadu surpassed the circulation of Andhra Prabha.

1979: Expanded to include magazines

In 1979, the newspaper expanded to include Sitara, a weekly film magazine, Vipula, a monthly magazine with short stories, Chatura, a monthly novel and Annadatha, a farmer's monthly.

1982: Support of the Telugu Desam Party

Since its foundation in 1982, Eenadu has supported the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) due to Ramoji Rao's feelings towards the Congress government and his relationship with N. T. Rama Rao.

1982: Launched editions in smaller towns

With the introduction of offset printing, photocomposing software and computers, Eenadu was able to launch editions in smaller towns like Tirupathi in 1982.

1983: Support of Telugu Desam Party during elections

During the 1983 elections, Eenadu supported Rama Rao's campaign by publishing positive stories. This led to a massive increase in subscriptions, with Eenadu going from a circulation of 230,000 copies to 350,000.

1989: Concerns about Rama Rao's leadership

By 1989, Eenadu expressed some concerns about Rama Rao's leadership, due to his continued loss of public support.

1989: Introduced district dailies

In 1989, Eenadu introduced district dailies (tabloid edition) to carry its presence not only into district towns but also taluka towns. These district dailies were based on market research asserting that heavy local content would generate new groups of readers and boost advertising revenue.

1995: Rivals Fold

By 1995, Andhra Patrika and Udayam folded, leaving Eenadu with over seventy-five percent of the audited circulation of Telugu dailies.

2004: Investigation of Margadarsi

In 2004, Margadarsi faced investigation for irregular financial practices.

2008: Launch of Sakshi

In 2008, Sakshi was launched under Jagan Mohan Reddy's ownership as a counter to what his father claimed was biased news from TDP-supporting papers.

2017: Magazines stopped circulation

In 2017, the magazines Sitara, Vipula, Chatura and Annadatha stopped circulation due to lack of demand in favour of web content.

2018: Ownership Structure

As per the 2018 report of Media Ownership Monitor, Ramoji Rao and family own 97.56% stake in Ushodaya Enterprises.

2019: Circulation Ranking

For Q2 2019, Eenadu ranks eighth among the most circulated Indian-language dailies with a circulation of 1,614,105.

2020: Ramoji Rao stepped down as chief editor

In 2020, Ramoji Rao served as the chief editor of Eenadu until 2020.
