GOES-19, formerly known as GOES-U, is the fourth and final satellite in the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-R series, developed by NASA and operated by NOAA. Launched in June 2024, this advanced weather satellite is designed to monitor Earth's weather, oceans, and environment from a geostationary orbit. A key enhancement of GOES-19 is the inclusion of the Compact Coronagraph (CCOR-1), which allows it to observe the solar corona and detect coronal mass ejections that could impact space weather on Earth. By providing high-resolution imagery and continuous atmospheric monitoring, GOES-19 significantly improves the accuracy of severe weather forecasts, lightning detection, and hurricane tracking. It serves as a vital tool for meteorologists, helping to protect life and property by providing critical real-time data on atmospheric conditions and solar activity.
On 25 June 2024, the GOES-19 satellite was successfully launched into space from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, United States, using a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket.
On April 7, 2025, the GOES-19 satellite was officially placed into service at the GOES-East position, while the GOES-16 satellite transitioned into a backup storage status.
As of July 11, 2025, the Compact Coronagraph (CCOR-1) instrument aboard the GOES-19 satellite successfully identified 70 sungrazer comets through the analysis of its collected imagery.
Between October 18 and October 24, 2025, the GOES-19 satellite successfully observed the faint comet 3I/ATLAS, demonstrating its capability to detect astronomical objects with a magnitude as dim as 12.
In 2025, the NASA-ESA SOHO satellite is scheduled for retirement, necessitating the transition of solar wind monitoring tasks to the CCOR-1 instrument on GOES-19 and the CCOR instrument on the SOLAR-1 spacecraft.
The GOES-R series of satellites, which includes GOES-19, is scheduled to ensure the continued availability of the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) system through the year 2036.
