Galactus is a cosmic entity in Marvel Comics who consumes planets to survive. Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, he first appeared in Fantastic Four #48. Originally a mortal, Galactus evolved into a being of immense power and a vital, albeit destructive, part of the cosmic balance. Unlike typical villains, Galactus operates on a scale beyond mortal morality, driven by the primal need to consume planetary energy to sustain his existence. He is depicted as a god-like figure, indifferent to the ethical implications of his actions.
In 1966, Galactus debuted, establishing his primary motive as the "Devourer of Worlds" before his transformation in 2016.
In 2001, an alternate universe version of Galactus fused with Ultron from Earth-22666 appeared in Marvel Universe 2001: Millennial Visions #1.
In May 2007, an alternate universe version of Galactus from Earth-70105 appeared in Bullet Points.
In June 2016, Galactus undergoes a significant transformation in The Ultimates (vol. 3) #1–6, becoming the "Lifebringer". This change, initiated by writer Al Ewing, alters Galactus' core nature, compelling him to infuse dead planets with life-sustaining energies. This marks a departure from his traditional role as the "Devourer of Worlds", fundamentally shifting his motives for the first time since his debut.
In November 2016, The Ultimates 2 (vol. 2) #1 was released, continuing the story of the Lifebringer Galactus, who takes on a leadership role within the Ultimates.
In August 2017, The Ultimates 2 (vol. 2) #10 was released, marking a continuation of the Lifebringer Galactus storyline.
In June 2018, writer Gerry Dugan reverted Galactus back to his "Devourer of Worlds" persona in Infinity Countdown #4, concluding his time as the Lifebringer.
In July 2019, History of the Marvel Universe #1, a miniseries by Mark Waid, was released. The series depicts Galactus as the in-story narrator, recounting major events in Marvel continuity to Franklin Richards as the universe nears its end.
In December 2019, History of the Marvel Universe #6, the final issue of the miniseries by Mark Waid, was released, concluding Galactus's narration of major events to Franklin Richards.
In August 2020, during the "Herald of Thunder" story arc in Thor (vol. 6) #1–6, Galactus was killed by Thor.
In July 2022, after a two-year absence, Galactus reappeared in Fantastic Four (vol. 6) #45, the final issue of the "Reckoning War" event, where he was resurrected by his former heralds.
