Matthew James Chapman is a professional baseball third baseman currently playing for the San Francisco Giants in Major League Baseball (MLB). Prior to joining the Giants, he played for the Oakland Athletics and the Toronto Blue Jays. He is recognized as one of the best defensive third basemen in baseball. Chapman is known for his strong arm and excellent fielding ability.
In 2011, after not being selected in the MLB draft, Chapman enrolled at California State University, Fullerton.

In 2014, as a junior at California State University, Fullerton, Chapman had a batting line of .312/.412/.498, hit six home runs, and recorded 48 RBIs in 54 games.
In 2014, the Oakland Athletics selected Chapman in the first round of the MLB draft.
In 2015, Chapman spent the entire season with the Class A-Advanced Stockton Ports, batting .250 with 23 home runs and 57 RBIs in 80 games.
In 2016, Chapman was named the Texas League Player of the Year. He started the season with Midland, and after 117 games, he was promoted to the Triple-A Nashville Sounds.
On June 15, 2017, the Athletics promoted Chapman to the major leagues, and he made his MLB debut that night.
Chapman began the 2017 season playing for Nashville. He suffered a wrist injury in the first series and spent two weeks on the disabled list. In 49 games for Nashville, he batted .257 with 16 home runs and 30 RBIs.
On June 16, 2018, Chapman was placed on the disabled list due to a bruised right thumb.
In 2019, Chapman had an excellent offensive season, hitting 36 home runs with 91 RBIs. He played in 156 games, striking out 147 times in 583 at-bats.
On September 12, 2020, Chapman opted out of the remainder of the season due to hip tendonitis that required surgery.
In 2020, Chapman batted .232/.276/.535 with 10 home runs and 25 RBIs. He last played on September 6 due to hip tendonitis and underwent labrum surgery that month, ending his season.
In 2021, Chapman batted .210/.314/.403 with 27 home runs and 72 RBIs. He also became the first Athletic to strike out 200 times in a season.
On March 16, 2022, the Athletics traded Chapman to the Toronto Blue Jays.
On March 22, 2022, Chapman signed a two-year contract worth $25 million with the Blue Jays.
On April 9, 2023, Chapman hit his first career grand slam off Reid Detmers in a game against the Los Angeles Angels.
On March 3, 2024, Chapman signed a one-year, $18 million contract with the San Francisco Giants.
On September 4, 2024, Chapman signed a six-year, $151 million contract extension.
