Mazzy Star, formed in 1988 in Santa Monica, California, is an American alternative rock band that emerged from the group Opal. When Opal's vocalist Kendra Smith departed, Hope Sandoval, a friend of founding member David Roback, stepped in. The band's present lineup includes Sandoval, Colm Ó Cíosóig, Suki Ewers on keyboards, and Josh Yenne.
David Roback formed the band Clay Allison in 1983. Around this time, Hope Sandoval, a fan of Roback's previous band, gave him a demo tape, leading to their eventual collaboration in Mazzy Star.
