History of Minecraft Dungeons in Timeline

Minecraft Dungeons is a dungeon crawler spin-off of Minecraft, developed by Mojang Studios and Double Eleven, and published by Xbox Game Studios in May 2020. Available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One, it later released on Steam and was adapted into an arcade game. Development concluded in November 2022, with Mojang announcing the end of further updates in September 2023. By that time, the game had reached 25 million players across all platforms.

September 28, 2018: Game Announcement

On September 28, 2018, Minecraft Dungeons was announced during the Minecon live streaming event.

April 24, 2020: Closed Beta End

The closed beta for Minecraft Dungeons ran for a month and concluded on April 24, 2020.

May 2020: Initial Release

In May 2020, Minecraft Dungeons was released for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One.

May 26, 2020: Game Release

On September 8, 2020, the Creeping Winter DLC expansion for Minecraft Dungeons was released.

October 13, 2020: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC

On October 13, 2020, three music tracks from Minecraft Dungeons (Halland, Dalarna, and The Arch-Illager) were added as downloadable content in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as part of Challenger Pack 7, which also included Steve and Alex from Minecraft as playable fighters.

December 9, 2020: Howling Peaks DLC Release

On December 9, 2020, the Howling Peaks DLC expansion for Minecraft Dungeons was released.

February 24, 2021: Flames of the Nether DLC Release

On February 24, 2021, the Flames of the Nether DLC expansion for Minecraft Dungeons was released, alongside a patch for the Xbox One version with enhancements for Xbox Series X/S consoles.

March 2021: Arcade Version Announcement

In March 2021, Mojang announced an arcade version of Minecraft Dungeons associated with collectible cards, created by Play Mechanix and Raw Thrills.

May 2021: Arcade Version Release

In May 2021, the arcade version of Minecraft Dungeons by Raw Thrills was released.

Sometime in May 2021, the arcade version of Minecraft Dungeons debuted at Dave & Buster's restaurants.

May 26, 2021: Hidden Depths DLC Release

On May 26, 2021, the Hidden Depths DLC expansion for Minecraft Dungeons was released.

July 28, 2021: Echoing Void DLC and Ultimate Edition Release

On July 28, 2021, the Echoing Void DLC expansion for Minecraft Dungeons was released, and Minecraft Dungeons: Ultimate Edition, which included all 6 DLCs and access to all Hero Pass Cosmetics, was also released.

September 22, 2021: Steam Release

In November 2022, development concluded with the release of the final content update, version 1.17.

November 2022: Weekly Rotation Frequency Increase

In November 2022, the rotation frequency of The Tower was increased to weekly.

September 28, 2023: End of Development Announced

On September 28, 2023, Mojang officially announced the end of development for Minecraft Dungeons, at which point the game had reached 25 million players across all platforms.
