Phillip Louis Maton III is a professional baseball pitcher, currently a free agent, who has played for several MLB teams, including the San Diego Padres, Cleveland Indians, Houston Astros, Tampa Bay Rays, New York Mets, St. Louis Cardinals and Texas Rangers. He was drafted by the Padres in 2015 after playing college baseball for the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs and made his major league debut in 2017.
In 2015, the San Diego Padres selected Phil Maton in the 20th round of the Major League Baseball draft. He made his professional debut that year with the Low–A Tri-City Dust Devils.
In 2016, Phil Maton pitched for the Single–A Fort Wayne TinCaps, High–A Lake Elsinore Storm, and Triple–A El Paso Chihuahuas, making a total of 38 appearances for the three teams. After the season, he played in the Arizona Fall League for the Peoria Javelinas.
On June 11, 2017, Phil Maton was called up by the San Diego Padres. He remained with the big league club for the rest of the season, pitching in a middle relief role.
In 2017, Phil Maton began the season with Triple-A El Paso.
In 2018, Phil Maton started the season with Triple-A El Paso, but was quickly recalled to the majors. He also went to the DL with a strained lat and later returned to the team after a rehab assignment. He stayed with the Padres for the remainder of the year, again pitching in middle relief.
On July 12, 2019, Phil Maton was traded to the Cleveland Indians in exchange for international bonus pool allotments.
On July 30, 2021, the Cleveland Indians traded Phil Maton to the Houston Astros along with minor league catcher Yainer Díaz in exchange for outfielder Myles Straw.
On March 22, 2022, Phil Maton avoided arbitration with the Houston Astros, agreeing to a $1.55 million contract for the season.
On January 13, 2023, Phil Maton signed a one-year, $2.55 million contract with the Houston Astros, avoiding salary arbitration.
On February 14, 2024, Phil Maton signed a one-year contract with the Tampa Bay Rays, that included a club option for the 2025 season.
On July 9, 2024, the Tampa Bay Rays traded Phil Maton to the New York Mets in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations.
On March 13, 2025, Phil Maton signed a one-year, $2 million contract with the St. Louis Cardinals.
On July 31, 2025, the St. Louis Cardinals traded Phil Maton to the Texas Rangers in exchange for Skylar Hales, Mason Molina, and international bonus pool money.
