Smash Mouth is an American rock band formed in 1994 in San Jose, California. Originally consisting of Steve Harwell, Kevin Coleman, Greg Camp, and Paul De Lisle, the band achieved mainstream success with hit songs like "Walkin' on the Sun", "All Star", and "Then The Morning Comes", and a cover of "I'm a Believer". Steve Harwell's departure in 2021 left Paul De Lisle as the only original member of the band.
In 1990, Steve Harwell and Kevin Coleman met, beginning the journey towards the formation of Smash Mouth.
In 1994, Smash Mouth officially formed, with Steve Harwell, Kevin Coleman, Greg Camp, and Paul De Lisle as its initial members.
In 1997, Smash Mouth released the song "Walkin' on the Sun".
In 1997, Smash Mouth released their debut album, Fush Yu Mang, which featured keyboardist Michael Klooster and included the hit single "Walkin' on the Sun".
In 1998, Smash Mouth released the singles "The Fonz" and a cover of "Why Can't We Be Friends" from the film Wild Things.
In 1999, Smash Mouth released The East Bay Sessions and experienced drummer changes, with Kevin Coleman leaving due to back problems and being temporarily replaced by Michael Urbano and Mitch Marine.

In 1999, Smash Mouth released their second album, Astro Lounge, which featured a more pop-oriented sound and included hit singles like "All Star" and "Then the Morning Comes".

In December 2005, Smash Mouth released a Christmas album titled Gift of Rock, featuring covers of Christmas songs and one original track.
On February 14, 2006, Michael Urbano left Smash Mouth due to creative differences, leading to a series of drummer replacements.
On September 19, 2006, Smash Mouth released the album Summer Girl after shelving the Old Habits project. Much of their music was used for the movie Zoom.
In early 2007, Jason Sutter left Smash Mouth to play drums for Chris Cornell and Mitch Marine returned as a fill-in drummer.
In the summer of 2008, Greg Camp left Smash Mouth and Leroy Miller joined to play guitar.
In 2009, Leroy Miller left Smash Mouth, and Greg Camp returned to the band.
In 2010, Mitch Marine left Smash Mouth again and was replaced by Michael Urbano, who left after one year and was replaced by Marine once again. Marine left after a brief spell and was replaced by Randy Cooke.
In June 2011, a writer at Something Awful offered Steve Harwell $20 to eat 24 eggs, which led to a fundraising challenge.
In July 2011, Steve Harwell accepted the 24 egg challenge if fans pledged $10,000 for St. Jude Children's Hospital. The goal was quickly reached.
On October 11, 2011, Steve Harwell successfully completed the 24 eggs challenge at Johnny Garlic's restaurant, raising $15,000 for St. Jude Children's Hospital.
In 2011, Greg Camp left Smash Mouth again, and Sean Hurwitz joined the band.
On September 4, 2012, Smash Mouth released their sixth studio album, Magic, after signing with 429 Records. The album was primarily produced by new band member Mike Krompass.
In 2012, Sean Hurwitz departed, Mike Krompass joined, and later in the year, Hurwitz returned to Smash Mouth.
On February 1, 2013, Smash Mouth headlined the AutoNation Coast to Coast rebranding event in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
In 2013, Smash Mouth participated in the "Under the Sun" tour with Gin Blossoms and Sugar Ray.
On October 6, 2014, Smash Mouth composed two songs for the English version of the South Korean animated film Pororo, The Racing Adventure.
In 2014, Smash Mouth was part of the "Under the Sun" tour with Uncle Kracker, Blues Traveler, and Sugar Ray.
On June 14, 2015, at the Taste of Fort Collins, Steve Harwell became angry after bread was thrown on stage, resulting in a profanity-laced tirade and his departure from the stage.
In May 2016, Smash Mouth released their first live album, Playlist: The Very Best of Smash Mouth, through Sony Music, featuring recordings from Rapid City and Manila.
In 2016, Smash Mouth added Sam Eigen as a new member and saw the return of Randy Cooke.
On November 1, 2018, Smash Mouth released the single "Unity" featuring Kool Keith and Darryl McDaniels.
In early 2018, Greg Camp rejoined Smash Mouth, and an acoustic re-recording of Fush Yu Mang was released for its 20th anniversary.

On August 8, 2020, Smash Mouth performed at the 2020 Sturgis Rally, where vocalist Steve Harwell made controversial remarks about COVID-19.
In October 2021, Smash Mouth performed at The Big Sip beer and wine festival, where Harwell's behavior led to his retirement due to health issues.
In 2021, Steve Harwell departed from Smash Mouth, leaving Paul De Lisle as the sole remaining original member.
