Valley City State University (VCSU) is a public university located in Valley City, North Dakota, and is part of the North Dakota University System. Founded in 1890 as Valley City State Normal School, it initially served as a two-year teachers' college. In 1921, it gained authorization to award bachelor's degrees and was renamed Valley City State Teachers College. Following World War II, the university broadened its academic offerings beyond teacher education and became Valley City State College in 1963. The institution adopted the name State University of North Dakota-Valley City in 1986, before receiving its current designation as Valley City State University a year later.
In 1901, a suspension bridge was constructed for $1,940 to connect the Normal School with the town of Valley City.
In 1921, Valley City State Normal School was authorized to confer bachelor's degrees and subsequently changed its name to Valley City State Teachers College.
In 1922, Valley City State's athletic teams, the Vikings, competed in the North Dakota College Athletic Conference (NDCAC).
In 1963, Valley City State Teachers College became Valley City State College following an expansion in programs outside of teacher education after World War II.
In 1986, Valley City State College was renamed State University of North Dakota-Valley City.
In 1992, a teenager attempted to drive a car across the footbridge spanning the Sheyenne River, resulting in damage to the decking, beams, cable anchors, and railing. The bridge was subsequently restored and reinforced.
In 1999, The Valley City State Vikings competed in the North Dakota College Athletic Conference (NDCAC).
In 2000, Valley City State's athletic teams, the Vikings, competed in the Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC).
In 2010, the Valley City State Vikings competed in the Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC).
In 2011, The Valley City State Vikings competed as an NAIA Independent within the Association of Independent Institutions (AII).
In 2012, Valley City State's athletic teams, the Vikings, competed as an NAIA Independent within the Association of Independent Institutions (AII).
In 2015, Valley City State University graduated 302 students, marking the largest graduating class in the university's 125-year history.
