Winthrop University is a public university located in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Established in 1886, its founder was David Bancroft Johnson, superintendent of Columbia, South Carolina, schools. The university's establishment was made possible through a grant from Robert Charles Winthrop, a philanthropist and chair of the Peabody Education Board in Massachusetts.
In 1920, the school underwent its fourth name change, becoming Winthrop College, the South Carolina College for Women. This marked a significant transition in the institution's identity.
