Dust storm warning

A dust storm warning is issued by the National Weather Service in the United States when blowing dust frequently reduces visibility to 1/4 mile (400 m) or less. This typically occurs when winds reach 25 miles per hour (40 km/h) or higher. The warning alerts the public to potentially dangerous conditions caused by reduced visibility.

June 19, 2018: First Issuance of Storm-Based Dust Storm Warnings

As of June 19, 2018, the National Weather Service began using the new "storm-based" dust storm warnings.

November 1, 2018: New Dust Storm Warning Format

On November 1, 2018, the National Weather Service started issuing dust storm warnings in a polygon- and storm-based format, similar to severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings. The zone-based dust storm warning was replaced by the new blowing dust warning. Also, a dust advisory will be issued if the criteria for a warning are not met, but travel impacts are expected.
