On January 2, 1943, Filiz Akın was born in Ankara to Habibe Leman Şaşırmaz, a tailor, and Bekir Sami Akın, a judge. Her family had Albanian and Circassian roots. She lived in Beypazarı until age 3 and started primary school at age 5.
In June 1960, Filiz Akın graduated from TED Ankara College Foundation Schools. She had been a successful student, earning awards for her paintings and compositions, and was chosen as an ideal student. After graduation, she began working at the Ankara branch of American Export-Isbrandtsen Lines.
In 1965, Filiz Akın's son İlker was born from her first marriage to Türker İnanoğlu. The family lived in Şişli during this time.
In 1974, Filiz Akın and Türker İnanoğlu divorced after 10 years of marriage.
In September 1979, Filiz Akın was stabbed in the leg by an attacker while entering the İzmir Efes Hotel. The attacker claimed to be in love with her and later changed his confession, stating that he was hired by mafia boss Mehmet Nabi İnciler. Akın survived with a slight wound and appeared on stage the same night.
In 1982, Filiz Akın married Bubi Rubinstein.
In 1991, Filiz Akın's father, Sami Akın, passed away in İzmir.

In May 1994, Filiz Akın married Sönmez Köksal, the chief of the National Intelligence Organization, in Ankara. The witnesses to their marriage were President Süleyman Demirel and Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey Hüsamettin Cindoruk.
In February 1998, Filiz Akın's husband, Sönmez Köksal, was appointed as ambassador to France, leading them to live at the Turkish embassy in Paris for four years. During this time, Filiz Akın promoted Turkish culture.
In 2002, Filiz Akın learned that she had nasopharynx cancer. She received treatment at the MD Anderson Cancer Center of the University of Texas and was cured.
In 2005, Filiz Akın launched a campaign to benefit the Turkey Breast Foundation and support the "yellow bracelets against cancer," which sold over 1 million bracelets. She also supported the "blue bracelet" campaign for the Hacettepe University Hope House project.
In 2006, the city council in Beypazarı named the street where Filiz Akın lived until she was 3 years old as "Filiz Akın Sokak".
From 2007, Filiz Akın has been a supporter of "Türkiye'de İşitmeyen Kalmasın", a project initiated by The Starkey Hearing Foundation's and Turkey EMÖV Foundation.
