History of Google Store in Timeline

The Google Store is Google's online hardware retail outlet, launched on March 11, 2015, replacing the device section of Google Play. It sells Google's own hardware products, including Pixel phones, Google Nest smart home devices, Chromecast streaming dongles, Fitbit devices, and accessories. Formerly, it sold Nexus, Daydream, Stadia, and Cardboard devices. The store focuses on products created by or in collaboration with Google.

March 11, 2015: Google Store Introduction

On March 11, 2015, Google Store was introduced, replacing the Devices section of Google Play as Google's hardware retailer.

March 2015: Google Store in Currys, London

In March 2015, Google opened a store-within-a-store within a branch of British electrical retailer Currys, at Tottenham Court Road, London, which has since closed.

October 2016: Made by Google Pop-up Showroom

In October 2016, Google opened Made by Google, a temporary pop-up showroom in the SoHo neighborhood of New York City. The space displayed the Pixel smartphone, Google Home smart speaker, and Daydream View virtual reality headset.

November 2016: Google Shop Launch in Best Buy Canada

In November 2016, Google launched "Google Shop," a store-within-a-store at select Best Buy locations in Canada to display its hardware products and build a premium mobile device customer base.

In 2016, Google Store received the Webby Award in the Consumer Electronics category.

May 2021: Announcement of Google Store Chelsea

In May 2021, Google announced it would open a physical retail store as part of its Chelsea Market campus in New York City.

June 17, 2021: Opening of Google Store Chelsea

On June 17, 2021, Google Store Chelsea opened to the public. The store showcases Google's hardware products, subscription services, software products, and exclusive merchandise.

In May 2022, during the 2022 Google I/O keynote, Google announced that a second physical Google Store would open in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
