Guardians of the Gate

Guardians of the Gate is a 1991 bronze sculpture of a sea lion family by Miles Metzger. It is located near Pier 39 and the Embarcadero Center in San Francisco. The sculpture was dedicated in January 1992. The Smithsonian Institution surveyed it as part of the Save Outdoor Sculpture! program in the same year. The Pier 39 Limited Partnership and the Embarcadero Center administer the sculpture.

1990: Sculpture Creation

In 1990, the Guardians of the Gate sculpture, depicting a "nuzzling" male and female with a pup, was created.

1991: Sculpture Created

In 1991, the Everdur bronze sculpture depicting a family of sea lions was created by Miles Metzger. Also in 1991, the sculpture was cast and surveyed by the Smithsonian Institution's Save Outdoor Sculpture! program.

January 22, 1992: Sculpture Dedicated

On January 22, 1992, the Guardians of the Gate sculpture was dedicated.
