Following contract negotiations related to Halo 3, Bungie announced its independence from Microsoft in 2007, though they remained contractually obligated to deliver additional Halo games while Microsoft retained the franchise rights.
In 2007, 343 Industries was established with an initial team of approximately twelve employees. During this foundational period, Frank O'Connor transitioned from Bungie to become the franchise director, Kiki Wolfkill joined the leadership team as a studio head, and the studio collaborated with Starlight Runner to create a comprehensive story bible for the Halo universe.
In July 2009, 343 Industries officially announced the production of a seven-part anime series titled Halo Legends.

On September 12, 2022, Bonnie Ross officially announced her departure from her role as the head of 343 Industries. Following this transition, the studio head responsibilities were redistributed among three leaders: Pierre Hintze became the studio head, Bryan Koski took on the role of General Manager of the franchise, and Elizabeth Van Wyck assumed management of business and operations.
