Jack Hughes is an American professional ice hockey player currently playing center and serving as alternate captain for the New Jersey Devils in the NHL. He was developed through the U.S. National Development Team and was selected first overall by the Devils during the 2019 NHL Entry Draft. Hughes is considered a prominent figure in contemporary hockey.
In 1992, Jack Hughes' mother, Ellen Weinberg-Hughes, played for the United States women's national ice hockey team, and won a silver medal at the 1992 World Championship.
In the first six games of the 2023-24 season saw Hughes put up 17 points, a total that had not been reached so quickly since Mario Lemieux in 1995-96.

In early April 2022, after a career high of 26 goals and 30 assists in 49 games, Hughes sustained an MCL sprain after a hit, causing him to miss the final 13 games.
During the 2022–23 season, Hughes reached career highs in goals (43), assists (56), and points (99), leading the Devils to third in the NHL. He was selected for his second All-Star Game and qualified for the Stanley Cup playoffs.
On November 3, 2023, during a game against the St. Louis Blues, Hughes sustained a shoulder injury after falling into the boards at high speed and left the game.
In January 2024, Hughes was named to his third consecutive All-Star Game, where he, his brother Quinn, and Michael Bublé were named co-captains of one of the teams. He sustained another upper-body injury shortly after and was unable to participate in the All-Star Game.
On November 15, 2025, Hughes underwent surgery on his finger after cutting it on glass at a team dinner.
On January 2, 2026, Hughes was named to the United States' roster for the 2026 Winter Olympics.
