Jake Oettinger

Jakob Donald Oettinger is a professional ice hockey goaltender currently playing for the Dallas Stars in the NHL. Oettinger played college hockey at Boston University. He was drafted by the Stars in the first round, 26th overall, of the 2017 NHL entry draft after participating in the USA Hockey National Team Development Program. He was considered a top prospect leading up to the draft.


1987: Second-highest in a game 7

Oettinger recorded 64 saves during game 7, the second-highest in a game 7 behind only Kelly Hrudey's 73 during the 1987 Easter Epic.

1998: Highest in the history of the Stars

Oettinger was leading all goaltenders in the first round with a .954 save percentage, also the second-highest in the history of the Stars, behind only Ed Belfour during the 1998 conference semifinals.

2014: Joined the USNTDP Juniors

In 2014, after his freshman year at Lakeville North High School, Oettinger committed to the USA Hockey National Team Development Program (USNTDP) Juniors for the 2014–15 season.

2017: Drafted by the Dallas Stars

In 2017, Oettinger was drafted in the first round, 26th overall, of the NHL entry draft by the Dallas Stars.

2018: Named MVP of the Hockey East Tournament

In 2018, during his second season at Boston University, Oettinger was named to the Hockey East All-Tournament Team of the 2018 Hockey East Men's Ice Hockey Tournament and earned the William Flynn Tournament Most Valuable Player award after he helped Boston win their ninth Hockey East Tournament title.

March 25, 2019: Signed with the Dallas Stars

On March 25, 2019, Oettinger signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Dallas Stars and was assigned to their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Texas Stars, on an amateur tryout contract.

2023: Early struggles in the 2023–24 season

Oettinger struggled early on in the 2023–24 season, however, he went 35–14–4 that season and finished with a .905 save percentage and 2.72 goals-against average.

October 17, 2024: Signed an eight-year contract extension

On October 17, 2024, Oettinger signed an eight-year, $66 million contract extension.
