Matt Vierling is a professional baseball utility player currently with the Detroit Tigers. Drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the fifth round of the 2018 MLB draft after playing college baseball at the University of Notre Dame, Vierling made his major league debut with the Phillies in 2021. He was later traded to the Detroit Tigers.
In 2015, Vierling was selected in the 30th round of the Major League Baseball draft by the St. Louis Cardinals, but he chose not to sign with the team.
In 2018, Vierling was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the fifth round of the Major League Baseball draft and signed with the team. He was assigned to the Williamsport Crosscutters.
In 2019, Vierling spent the season with the Clearwater Threshers of the Class A-Advanced Florida State League.
On June 19, 2021, Vierling was selected to the 40-man roster and promoted to the major leagues, making his debut with the Philadelphia Phillies as a pinch hitter against the San Francisco Giants. He got a hit, stole a base, and scored a run.
On September 25, 2021, Vierling hit his first Major League home run in a game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
In 2021, after starting at the Phillies' alternate training site, Vierling was assigned to the Double-A Reading Fightin Phils. After performing well, he was promoted to the Class AAA Lehigh Valley IronPigs.
On June 7, 2022, Vierling was recalled to the Phillies from the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs and hit the game-winning home run off of Josh Hader.
On June 17, 2022, Vierling had his first multi-home run game in a win against the Washington Nationals.
On September 21, 2022, Vierling went 5-for-5, including his first walk-off hit in the 10th inning, leading the Phillies to a 4–3 win against the Toronto Blue Jays.
On January 7, 2023, Vierling was traded by the Phillies to the Detroit Tigers along with Nick Maton and Donny Sands for Gregory Soto and Kody Clemens.
On January 9, 2025, the Tigers and Vierling agreed to a one-year, $3.005 million contract, avoiding arbitration.
On May 23, 2025, Vierling was activated from the injured list (IL) after recovering from a strained rotator cuff and returned to his role as a regular contributor in the Tigers' lineup.
