PlayStation Studios

PlayStation Studios, formerly SCE Worldwide Studios, is the video game development division of Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE). Established in 2005 and rebranded in 2020, it encompasses all studios owned by SIE. The rebranding reflects the importance of the PlayStation brand. PlayStation Studios is responsible for developing a wide range of first-party games for the PlayStation consoles and other platforms.

In May 2008, Shuhei Yoshida succeeded Kazuo Hirai as president of SCE Worldwide Studios.

November 2019: Hermen Hulst Appointed President

In November 2019, Hermen Hulst became the president of SIE Worldwide Studios, succeeding Shuhei Yoshida.

May 2020: Rebranding to PlayStation Studios Announced

In May 2020, SIE announced the rebranding of the division to PlayStation Studios as part of the introduction of the PlayStation 5. PlayStation Studios serves as the publishing brand for Sony's first-party development studios.

2020: Rebranding to PlayStation Studios

In 2020, SCE Worldwide Studios was rebranded as PlayStation Studios to incorporate the PlayStation brand.

August 2022: Formation of PlayStation Studios Mobile Division

In August 2022, SIE announced the formation of the PlayStation Studios Mobile Division and acquired Savage Game Studios, later renamed Neon Koi.

February 2024: Job Cuts and Studio Closure Announced

In February 2024, Sony announced it would eliminate 900 jobs, or 8% of SIE and PlayStation Studios employees, including the closure of London Studio.

July 2024: Bungie Incubation Project Spun Out

In July 2024, Sony and Bungie announced that one of Bungie's incubation projects would be spun out as part of restructuring, forming a new studio within PlayStation Studios.

October 2024: Closure of Neon Koi and Firewalk Studios

In October 2024, Sony announced the closure of Neon Koi and Firewalk Studios.

March 2025: Formation of Dark Outlaw Games

In March 2025, Sony formed Dark Outlaw Games, a new studio under PlayStation Studios, led by Jason Blundell.

May 2025: TeamLFG Revealed

In May 2025, the Bungie incubation project spun out in July 2024 was revealed as teamLFG, a new studio within PlayStation Studios.

2025: Shift to PC and Mobile Games

In 2025, Sony plans for half of its first-party PlayStation Studios games to be on personal computers (PC) and mobile platforms.
