Sofía Montenegro Alarcón is a Nicaraguan journalist, social researcher, and feminist. Initially from a family aligned with the Somoza regime, she joined the opposition during the Sandinista Revolution. Although initially supportive of the Sandinista Party, she became a critic, believing it shifted to the right. She worked as an editor for the official Sandinista newspaper, Barricada, until 1994. Afterward, she established the Center for Communication Research (CINCO), an independent research organization, to operate free from government influence. Her work focuses on power dynamics, gender, and social interactions within Nicaraguan society.
In February 1954, Sofía Montenegro Alarcón was born. She later became a Nicaraguan journalist, social researcher, and feminist.
In 1968, Sofía Montenegro was sent to West Palm Beach, Florida to live with her sister to protect her from violence in Nicaragua. There, she finished high school and was first exposed to feminist thought and Marxism.
In 1978, Sofía Montenegro joined the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN), despite her family's involvement with the Somoza regime. She struggled to overcome the fear that her family name evoked in the Sandinista movement.
In July 1979, after the Sandinista Revolution, Sofía Montenegro became the international editor of the official Sandinista newspaper, Barricada. She suffered a stress-related breakdown and had to work her way back up the ranks, but was later fired for criticizing the Sandinista Party.
In 1984, Sofía Montenegro was asked to return as the editor of the editorial page of Barricada.
In 1986, Sofía Montenegro founded the Department of Gender and Communication Studies at the American University of Nicaragua. That same year, she became one of the main organizers and founders of the Partido de la Izquierda Erotica, PIE (Party of Erotic Left).
In 1986, Sofía Montenegro published her historical essay, "Memorias del Atlántico" (Memoirs of the Atlantic).
In 1987, Sofía Montenegro was one of the women who participated in the consultations, managing to add ten articles that addressed women's rights to the 1987 Constitution.
In 1987, Sofía Montenegro won the José Martí Prize for Journalism in Havana, Cuba, for her historical essay, "Memorias del Atlántico".
In 1989, Sofía Montenegro founded the weekly segment "Gente" (People) in the Barricada newspaper, targeting women and children's issues.
In 1990, before the election, the women threw their support in with the Sandinista Party and the Party of Erotic Left ceased to exist as a separate party.
In 1994, Sofía Montenegro founded the Center for Communication Research (CINCO) as an independent research organization, free from government influence, after serving as an editor of various divisions of the official Sandinista newspaper, Barricada.
Sofía Montenegro continued as the director of Gente until 1994.
In 1995, Sofía Montenegro founded and became the executive director of the Centro de Investigaciones para la Comunicación (CINCO), an organization focused on evaluating the impact of sex, gender, and power in Nicaraguan society.
In 1995, when the Sandinista party split into the Sandinista Renovation Movement (MRS), Sofía Montenegro and Gioconda Belli aligned with the MRS faction.
In 1996, Sofía Montenegro participated in the short documentary film "Se le movió el piso: un retrato de Managua" (The Earth Moved: A portrait of Managua) which won the Coral Award at the Havana Latinamerican Film Festival.
In 2000, Sofía Montenegro completed a study and published the book "La cultura sexual en Nicaragua" (Sexual Culture in Nicaragua), which evaluated the high levels of violence against women.
After Daniel Ortega's 2006 reelection, Sofía Montenegro was an outspoken critic of his administration, citing its lack of transparency, nepotism, and fundamentalism.
In 2015, Sofía Montenegro went to Washington, DC to participate in an Inter-American dialogue. She also criticized a proposed inter-oceanic canal project, maintaining that it would threaten the water quality of Lake Nicaragua and environmental health.
