Tamim Iqbal is a former Bangladeshi international cricketer and commentator. He served as the ODI captain for Bangladesh from 2020 to 2023. Notably, he holds the distinction of being the first Bangladeshi cricketer to score a century in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, achieving a score of 103* in the 2016 edition, which remains the highest individual score by a Bangladeshi player in any T20 World Cup tournament.
In August 2009, during Bangladesh's tour of the West Indies, Tamim Iqbal scored his maiden Test century, which helped Bangladesh secure a historic victory.
In 2011, Tamim Iqbal was named one of Wisden Cricketers' Almanack's four Cricketers of the Year and Wisden's Test Player of the Year.
In March 2012, Tamim Iqbal was initially dropped from the Bangladesh squad for the Asia Cup due to typhoid, but was later re-added. He responded by scoring four consecutive half-centuries. Bangladesh reached the final but lost to Pakistan. Later that month, Tamim signed with Pune Warriors in the Indian Premier League, but did not play any matches. In April, his central contract with the BCB was renewed.
In 2015, after the Cricket World Cup, Tamim Iqbal had an excellent ODI series against Pakistan, scoring two consecutive match-winning centuries. Bangladesh whitewashed Pakistan in the ODI series, and Tamim was named Man of the Series.
In 2016, at the ICC World Twenty20 held in India, Tamim Iqbal was the highest run-scorer, including an unbeaten 103* against Oman. He became the first Bangladesh cricketer to score an international T20I hundred, surpassing his previous high score of 88*. This helped Bangladesh qualify for the Super 10 stage. Tamim also hit the highest number of sixes in the tournament.
In the 2016 ICC Men's T20 World Cup, Tamim Iqbal became the first Bangladeshi cricketer to score a century. He scored 103* not out, which was the highest score by a Bangladeshi in any T20 World Cup tournament.
During the first ODI against Sri Lanka on March 26, 2017, Tamim Iqbal became the first Bangladeshi cricketer to score 10,000 international runs.
On January 23, 2018, Tamim Iqbal became the first batsman for Bangladesh to reach 6,000 runs in ODIs during a match against Zimbabwe. He also surpassed Sanath Jayasuriya's record to become the highest run-scorer at the R. Premadasa Stadium in ODIs.
In April 2018, Tamim Iqbal was one of ten cricketers awarded a central contract by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) for the 2018 season.
In July 2018, Tamim Iqbal scored 287 runs in a three-match series against West Indies, averaging 143.5. He was named Man of the Series for the fourth time in his ODI career. He also achieved a career-high rating point of 737, reaching 13th position in the ICC ODI Batsman Ranking.
In March 2020, during Zimbabwe's tour of Bangladesh, Tamim Iqbal scored 158 runs off 136 balls in the 2nd ODI, which was the highest individual score by a Bangladeshi batsman at the time. He also became the first Bangladeshi batsman to score 7,000 runs in ODIs. In the 3rd ODI, he scored 128 runs off 109 balls and formed a 292-run partnership with Litton Das, the highest partnership for Bangladesh in ODIs.
In January 2021, under Tamim Iqbal's captaincy, Bangladesh played their first ODI series against West Indies and won 3-0. Tamim was the highest run-scorer in the series with 158 runs in three matches.
In May 2021, Sri Lanka toured Bangladesh for a 3-match ODI series. Bangladesh won the first two matches but lost the third, securing a 2-1 series victory. This was Bangladesh's first bilateral series win against Sri Lanka.
In the 2024 Bangladesh Premiere League, Tamim Iqbal signed for Fortune Barisal and captained the team. Barisal won BPL for the first time under his leadership, with Tamim scoring 492 runs.
