Travis Hamonic is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenseman currently playing for the Detroit Red Wings in the NHL. Drafted 53rd overall by the New York Islanders in 2008, Hamonic has also played for the Calgary Flames, Vancouver Canucks, and Ottawa Senators throughout his NHL career. He is known for his defensive style of play.
In 2005, Hamonic was selected by the Moose Jaw Warriors of the Western Hockey League (WHL) in the ninth round of the WHL bantam draft.
In 2007–08, Hamonic had his first full season with the Warriors, putting up five goals and 22 points in the regular season as the Warriors made the WHL playoffs.
In 2008, Hamonic was drafted by the New York Islanders in the second round, 53rd overall, of the NHL entry draft.
In 2008–09, Hamonic improved offensively, scoring 13 goals and 40 points in 57 games.
Prior to the 2009–10 WHL season, Hamonic was named the co-captain of the Warriors alongside Jason Bast.
On January 9, 2010, Hamonic was traded to the Brandon Wheat Kings after playing 39 games for the Warriors.
On May 26, 2010, Hamonic signed a three-year entry-level contract with the New York Islanders.
On November 24, 2010, Hamonic made his NHL debut with the New York Islanders after playing 19 games in the AHL with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.
In 2010, Hamonic was selected to join Team Canada for the IIHF World Junior Championships. He suffered a separated shoulder and missed the final game, where Canada lost and earned a silver medal.
On February 1, 2011, Hamonic scored his first NHL goal against Ondřej Pavelec of the Atlanta Thrashers.
In the midst of the 2012–13 NHL lockout, Hamonic returned to the Islanders' affiliate in Bridgeport and posted ten points in 21 games.
Early in the 2015–16 NHL season, Hamonic requested a trade to Western Canada due to family reasons.
On October 12, 2016, Hamonic was named as an alternate captain for the upcoming season with the Islanders.
During the 2016–17 off season, Hamonic worked with a television show called "Hit The Ice" to give assistance and exposure to young First Nations hockey prospects.
On March 18, 2017, Hamonic broke a 34-game goalless drought by scoring in a 4–3 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets.
On June 24, 2017, Hamonic was traded to the Calgary Flames from the New York Islanders.
As an unrestricted free agent from the Flames, Hamonic remained un-signed entering training camp for the delayed 2020–21 season.
On January 4, 2021, Hamonic agreed to attend the Vancouver Canucks training camp on a professional tryout basis.
On January 12, 2021, Hamonic signed a one-year contract with the Vancouver Canucks.
On December 3, 2021, Hamonic was recalled by the Vancouver Canucks from their AHL affiliate, the Abbotsford Canucks.
On March 20, 2022, Hamonic was traded by the Canucks to the Ottawa Senators.
During the 2022-2023 season Hamonic played in 75 games with the Senators.
On August 15, 2025, Hamonic signed a one-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings for the 2025–26 season.
