World News Today

World News Today was a BBC News current-affairs program that aired until March 20, 2020. Originally conceived for American audiences as a morning show hosted by George Alagiah, it evolved into six daily editions targeting various markets. Ultimately, it became a single daily edition, simulcast on BBC Four, BBC News Channel, and BBC World News, geared toward UK, European, Middle Eastern, and African viewers. Philippa Thomas, Karin Giannone, and Kasia Madera presented the program on a rotating basis on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

April 2008: Title Sequence Update

In April 2008, World News Today updated its title sequence, adopting the standard title sequence of the BBC's English Regions with graphical alterations and international images.

February 2010: Channel Refresh

On 1 February 2010, as part of a channel refresh on BBC World News, five editions of World News Today were replaced with GMT, Impact Asia (now Impact), The Hub, Business Edition, and a standard edition of BBC World News.

December 2013: Giannone presented from South Africa

In December 2013, Giannone presented from South Africa following the death of Nelson Mandela and during live coverage from the trial of Oscar Pistorius in Pretoria.

2013: The Hub replaced with Global

In 2013, The Hub was replaced with Global.

2014: BBC World News replaced with Outside Source

In 2014, the standard edition of BBC World News was replaced by Outside Source.

June 2015: New Edition Launched

On 5 June 2015, a new edition of World News Today was launched on the BBC News Channel and BBC World News at 21:00 BST (summer) or GMT (winter) on Friday–Sunday.

2015: Madera presented from Poland

In 2015, Madera presented from Poland during the Polish parliamentary election.

November 2016: Thomas, Sharma, presented from Washington

In November 2016, Thomas and Sharma presented from Washington for the 2016 US presidential election.

July 2019: BBC Reith Update

From 15 July 2019, BBC News and World News were integrated into the BBC's custom font (BBC Reith) and World News Today was given a BBC Reith update.

March 2020: Final Episode Aired

On 20 March 2020, the final episode of World News Today aired at 22:00 GMT.

March 2020: Programme Aired Until

On 20 March 2020, the programme World News Today aired its final episode.

2023: Relaunch as BBC News Now, Verified Live and The World Today with Maryam Moshiri

In 2023, five editions were relaunched as BBC News Now, Verified Live and The World Today with Maryam Moshiri.

2024: The World Today with Maryam Moshiri

In 2024 five editions were relaunched as The World Today with Maryam Moshiri. While the successor to Beyond 100 Days, The Context continued.
