A blizzard is a severe snowstorm defined by strong, sustained winds and low visibility that lasts for several hours. Ground blizzards involve wind-blown snow already on the ground. Blizzards can be massive, spanning hundreds to thousands of kilometers.

1972: 1972 Iran Blizzard

In 1972, the deadliest blizzard in recorded history struck Iran, resulting in 4,000 reported deaths. The blizzard dropped as much as 26 feet of snow, completely covering 200 villages and burying an area the size of Wisconsin.

On March 12, 1993, the Storm of the Century, also known as the Great Blizzard of 1993, formed over the Gulf of Mexico. January 2008: 2008 Afghanistan Blizzard

In January 2008, a fierce blizzard struck Afghanistan, causing temperatures to plummet to −30 °C. Up to 180 centimetres of snow fell in mountainous regions, leading to at least 926 deaths and the loss of over 100,000 sheep and goats, and nearly 315,000 cattle.
