A closer look at the defining struggles that shaped Bob Huggins's life and career.
Bob Huggins, nicknamed "Huggy Bear," is a prominent American college basketball coach. He has served as head coach for multiple universities including Walsh, Akron, Cincinnati, Kansas State, and West Virginia. Huggins was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2022, recognizing his significant contributions to the sport.
On June 8, 2004, Bob Huggins was arrested for driving under the influence in Fairfax, Ohio. He later pleaded no contest to DUI.
On August 23, 2005, UC President Nancy L. Zimpher determined that the Bearcat program under Bob Huggins didn't align with her vision to enhance UC's academic standing, leading to Huggins's departure. Huggins accepted a $3 million buyout.
The 2012–13 season was the first for the Mountaineers in the Big 12 Conference. Huggins spoke about the new conference's schedule.
In an interview with ESPN in 2016, Huggins said it was "100 percent my fault" that the teams were not able to qualify.
In the 2016 NCAA tournament, "Press Virginia" was said to have "met its match" when Stephen F. Austin defeated WVU in the first round.
As late as 2017, the Bearcats men's basketball team's graduation rate continued to be much lower than for other athletic programs at Cincinnati.
Early in the 2017–18 season, Bob Huggins suggested that Press Virginia might not be used as often, due to his roster being depleted.
Despite beginning the 2018–19 season ranked No. 13, the Mountaineers finished the regular season at 12–19 (4–14), earning last place in Big 12 conference play for the first time.
In 2021, Bob Huggins addressed criticism of his graduation rates as a "terrible rap" in an interview with a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reporter.
On June 16, 2023, Bob Huggins was arrested in Pittsburgh and charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol. His blood alcohol content was 0.21%, more than two times the legal limit of 0.08%.
On July 2, 2023, Bob Huggins, through his attorney, claimed that "he never signed a resignation letter and never communicated a resignation to anyone by WVU." He threatened legal action if he was not given his job back. WVU officials stated that they were "confused by the allegations within the letter".
In 2023, Bob Huggins announced his resignation and retirement from West Virginia following a drunk driving arrest. He later denied officially resigning.
