Kyle Van Noy is an American football linebacker who currently plays for the Baltimore Ravens. Drafted by the Detroit Lions in 2014, he has also played for the New England Patriots, Miami Dolphins, and Los Angeles Chargers. Van Noy achieved significant success with the Patriots, winning two Super Bowl championships (LI and LIII).
Kyle Van Noy was born on March 26, 1991.
In 2008, while attending McQueen High School, Kyle Van Noy led his football team to a perfect 14-0 record and a 4A state championship.
Kyle Van Noy was admitted to BYU in 2009 but had to sit out his first year due to an honor code violation.
During the 2010 season, Van Noy played in every game for BYU, starting in two. He recorded 35 tackles, including 24 solo tackles, and was third on the team with 7.5 tackles-for-loss, including 2.0 sacks. He also forced two fumbles, had two quarterback hurries, two pass breakups, and one fumble recovery, which he returned for 44 yards and a touchdown.
For the second consecutive season in 2010, Kyle Van Noy recovered a fumble, which he had forced, and returned it for a game-winning touchdown.
In 2011, Van Noy played in all 13 games, starting in eight, and recorded 68 tackles. He led the team with 15 tackles for loss, seven sacks, 10 quarterback hurries, and tied for the team lead with three interceptions. He was the only FBS Division I player to record a stat in tackles, tackles for loss, sacks, interceptions, pass breakups, quarterback hurries, fumble recoveries, forced fumbles, blocked kicks, and touchdowns. He also returned a fumble recovery for the game-winning touchdown.
In 2012, Van Noy excelled as a defensive leader for BYU. The team led the nation in red zone defense and ranked highly in several other defensive categories, including rushing defense, 3rd down conversion percentage, total defense, 1st down defense, scoring defense, passing defense, sacks, 4th down conversion defense, and tackles for loss.
Van Noy had a standout performance in BYU's 23-6 victory over San Diego State in the 2012 San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl, recording eight tackles, 1.5 sacks, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery for a touchdown, an interception for a touchdown, and a blocked punt.
In December 2013, Kyle Van Noy proposed to his on-again, off-again girlfriend, Marissa Powell, the former Miss Utah USA.
On December 16, 2013, it was announced that Van Noy had accepted an invitation to play in the Senior Bowl.
Despite being projected as a first or second-round pick in the 2013 NFL draft, Van Noy opted to return to BYU for his senior season.
In 2013, Van Noy received numerous accolades, including being named to the watch lists for prestigious awards like the Butkus Award, Lombardi Award, Bronko Nagurski Trophy, Walter Camp, Chuck Bednarik Award, and the Lott Trophy. He was recognized as a Preseason All-American by Phil Steele, USA Today, and Sports Illustrated and earned All-America honors from various organizations. He was also named to the All-Independent first-team and received the All-Independent Defensive Player of the Year award.
On January 25, 2014, Van Noy participated in the Senior Bowl and made two solo tackles and one sack, contributing to the South team's 20-10 victory. His performance solidified his standing as a top outside linebacker prospect in the upcoming NFL draft.
In 2014, Kyle Van Noy married Marissa Powell. They are both members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The Detroit Lions selected Van Noy in the second round (40th overall) of the 2014 NFL draft. The Lions traded up to draft him. He signed a four-year, $5.10 million rookie contract with the Lions, including a $2.03 million signing bonus.
On January 4, 2015, Van Noy played in his first career playoff game, although the Lions lost 24-20 to the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC Wildcard Game.
On October 25, 2015, Van Noy recorded two solo tackles and his first career sack in the Lions' 28-19 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. He sacked quarterback Teddy Bridgewater for a one-yard loss in the first quarter.
The Detroit Lions traded Van Noy to the New England Patriots on October 25, 2016, along with a seventh-round pick in the 2017 NFL draft, in exchange for a sixth-round pick in 2017.
On January 22, 2017, Van Noy contributed four solo tackles in the New England Patriots' 36-17 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Championship Game.
On September 8, 2017, Kyle Van Noy signed a two-year contract extension with the New England Patriots worth $11.75 million, including a $3.5 million signing bonus and $5.5 million guaranteed.
During the 2017 NFL season, Kyle Van Noy had a solid performance. He recorded a season-high of 11 combined tackles in a game against the Houston Texans. He also achieved a season-high of two sacks in a game against the New York Jets. He played in 13 games, starting in 12, and unfortunately, experienced a calf injury that sidelined him for three games.
Van Noy joined the Patriots in 2017 after being traded the previous year. He missed the first two games but served as the backup weakside linebacker for the rest of the season.
On January 21, 2018, Kyle Van Noy and the New England Patriots played against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the AFC Championship Game. Van Noy had a strong performance, recording nine combined tackles, a sack, and a pass deflection. The Patriots won 24-20, advancing to Super Bowl LII.
On October 21, 2018, Kyle Van Noy scored his first career touchdown during a game against the Chicago Bears. He recovered a blocked punt and returned it 29 yards for the score.
On January 13, 2019, Kyle Van Noy and the New England Patriots faced the Los Angeles Chargers in the AFC Divisional Round of the playoffs. Van Noy contributed with four tackles to secure the Patriots' victory and advance to the AFC Championship Game.
On March 21, 2020, Kyle Van Noy signed a four-year, $51 million contract with the Miami Dolphins. This move reunited him with Brian Flores, the Dolphins' head coach, who was his former linebackers coach during their time with the New England Patriots.
