Paul Sewald is an American professional baseball pitcher currently playing for the Arizona Diamondbacks in MLB. Prior to joining the Diamondbacks, he played for the New York Mets, Seattle Mariners, Cleveland Guardians, and Detroit Tigers. He played college baseball at the University of San Diego.
In 2008, Paul Sewald was undrafted out of high school and enrolled at the University of San Diego to play college baseball for the San Diego Toreros.
In 2012, during his senior year, Paul Sewald pitched to an 8–4 record with a 3.09 ERA in 15 games for the San Diego Toreros.
In 2012, the New York Mets selected Paul Sewald in the tenth round of the Major League Baseball draft and he signed with them for a $1,000 bonus. He then made his professional debut with the Brooklyn Cyclones, pitching to a 0–2 record with a 1.88 ERA.
In 2013, Paul Sewald played with the Savannah Sand Gnats, achieving a 3–2 record and a 1.77 ERA in 35 relief appearances.
In 2014, Paul Sewald started the season with the St. Lucie Mets and was promoted to the Binghamton Mets, achieving an overall record of 5-1 with a 1.92 ERA in 43 appearances. He also played in the Arizona Fall League after the regular season.
In 2015, Paul Sewald played for Binghamton and achieved a 3–0 record with a 1.75 ERA in 44 games. He also earned a silver medal playing for the United States national baseball team at the 2015 Pan American Games.
In 2016, Paul Sewald played for the Las Vegas 51s, recording a 5–3 record with a 3.29 ERA in a career-high 65+2⁄3 innings pitched.
On April 8, 2017, Paul Sewald was promoted to the major leagues and made his MLB debut for the Mets against the Miami Marlins, allowing two runs in a third of an inning.
On May 26, 2019, Paul Sewald was designated for assignment by the Mets, following the promotion of Rajai Davis.
