Sırrı Süreyya Önder is a Turkish figure known for his diverse roles as a film director, actor, screenwriter, columnist, and politician. On 3 December 2018, Sırrı Süreyya Önder was sentenced to 43 months in prison for a speech he held during the Newroz festivities in 2013 and on 6 December 2018, he went to prison in Kocaeli.
On 4 October 2019, Sırrı Süreyya Önder was released from prison after the Constitutional Court ruled his freedom of expression had been violated a day earlier.
On 17 March 2021, the State Prosecutor to the Court of Cassation filed a lawsuit demanding a five-year ban from politics for Sırrı Süreyya Önder and 686 other HDP politicians.
On June 2, 2023, Sırrı Süreyya Önder became a Deputy Speaker of the Grand National Assembly.
On May 3, 2025, Sırrı Süreyya Önder died at Florence Nightingale Hospital, where he was being treated for multiple organ failure.
