Supermassive Games is a British video game developer located in Guildford, Surrey. It's renowned for creating horror games, with notable titles including Until Dawn, part of The Dark Pictures Anthology, The Quarry, and The Casting of Frank Stone. They've collaborated with several publishers, including Sony Interactive Entertainment, Bandai Namco Entertainment, 2K Games, and Behaviour Interactive.
In 2008, Pete Samuels, previously of Psygnosis and Electronic Arts, founded Supermassive Games and the company signed a contract to serve as Sony's second-party developer.
In 2011, Supermassive Games found initial success with its strategy as Sony's second-party developer, posting full-year sales of £5.7 million.
In 2012, Supermassive Games partnered with BBC and released "Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock". It was planned as the first game in a trilogy, but was poorly received and later cancelled.
In 2013, Supermassive Games, in partnership with BBC, released "Wonderbook: Walking with Dinosaurs".
In 2015, Supermassive Games released "Until Dawn" for PlayStation 4, which became an unexpected success for Sony. The game was initially envisioned as a PlayStation Move title, but motion controls were dropped during its retooling.
In August 2019, Supermassive Games partnered with Bandai Namco Entertainment to release "The Dark Pictures: Man of Medan", the first game in The Dark Pictures Anthology. Unlike previous titles, this game became available on Microsoft platforms.
In 2020, Supermassive Games released "Little Hope", as part of The Dark Pictures Anthology series.
In March 2021, Nordisk Film, through its Nordisk Games division, purchased a 30.7% stake in Supermassive Games.
In July 2022, Nordisk Games fully acquired Supermassive Games, making it a subsidiary of the Denmark-based company.
In 2022, Supermassive Games released both "The Devil in Me", which concluded the first season of The Dark Pictures Anthology, and "The Quarry", a standalone game.
In January 2024, it was reported that the company co-founders left Supermassive Games.
In February 2024, Bloomberg News reported that Supermassive Games informed 150 employees of potential layoffs, ultimately cutting 90 personnel.
