Toronto Open Data is an initiative by the City of Toronto government to provide free access to its datasets. The initiative operates under the principles of transparency, participation, accountability, and accessibility. Users are granted a worldwide, royalty-free, non-exclusive license to use, modify, and distribute the datasets in any current or future media and formats for any lawful purpose, as long as they provide proper credit. The open data initiative strives to enhance public knowledge and enable innovation by making civic data easily available.

November 2, 2009: Toronto Open Data website launch

On November 2, 2009, the Toronto Open Data website was launched at the Toronto Innovation Showcase forum.

2010: Click-through License Requirement

As of 2010, Toronto Open Data required a click-through license for any reuse, which made it unsuitable for producing physical products.

August 2013: Adoption of Pan Canada Open Government Licence

In August 2013, Toronto adopted the Pan Canada Open Government licence. This clarified confusion regarding attribution and data usage rights.

March 2016: Data Sets Available

As of March 2016, the City of Toronto's open data catalogue included over 200 data sets, covering areas like Festivals and Events, Licensed Child Care Centers, and transportation data.

January 15, 2018: Former Open Data Portal Update Ceased

On January 15, 2018, updates to the former Open Data Portal ceased, with 292 datasets available at that time.

January 2018: Approval of Toronto's Open Data Master Plan

In January 2018, Toronto's City Council approved Toronto's Open Data Master Plan, providing a direction for Open Data activities until 2022.

May 2018: New Open Data Portal launch

In May 2018, the new Open Data Portal was launched to increase accessibility.

February 25, 2019: Open Data Portal Migration Completed

On February 25, 2019, Open Data Toronto announced that the migration to the new Open Data Portal had been completed.

March 2019: Data Sets Available on the New Open Data Portal

As of March 2019, 295 datasets were available on the new Open Data Portal, with continuous updates being made.

2022: Open Data Master Plan Direction

Toronto's Open Data Master Plan provides a direction for Toronto's Open Data activities until 2022.
