Walt Jocketty is an American baseball executive, most recently serving as the Executive Adviser to the CEO of the Cincinnati Reds. He graduated from the University of Minnesota with a business administration degree. Jocketty notably served as the General Manager of the St. Louis Cardinals from 1994 to 2007, holding the position for 13 years.
On February 19, 1951, Walt Jocketty was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
In March 1980, Walt Jocketty began working for the Oakland Athletics as Director of Minor League Operations and Scouting, hired by owner Charlie Finley. He helped overhaul the A's minor league system and founded the Arizona Rookie League and the Dominican Summer League.
On October 14, 1994, Walt Jocketty became the General Manager of the St. Louis Cardinals.
During the 1994 season, Walt Jocketty briefly served as the assistant general manager of player personnel for the Colorado Rockies.
Following the 1995 season, Anheuser-Busch sold the St. Louis Cardinals, and the new ownership chose to retain Walt Jocketty as general manager. He brought in Tony La Russa as manager.
In 1996, the St. Louis Cardinals, under Walt Jocketty's leadership, won the National League Central Division championship.
In 2000, Walt Jocketty was named the Executive of the Year in MLB.
In 2002, the St. Louis Cardinals, under Walt Jocketty's leadership, won the National League Central Division championship.
In 2004, the St. Louis Cardinals, under Walt Jocketty's leadership, won the National League Central Division championship and National League Championship. Jocketty was also named Executive of the Year in MLB.
In 2005, the St. Louis Cardinals, under Walt Jocketty's leadership, won the National League Central Division championship.
In 2006, the St. Louis Cardinals, under Walt Jocketty's leadership, won the National League Central Division championship, the National League Championship and the World Series Championship.
On October 3, 2007, Walt Jocketty's tenure as the General Manager of the St. Louis Cardinals concluded.
On January 11, 2008, Walt Jocketty was hired as a Special Adviser to the Cincinnati Reds, assisting in baseball operations.
On April 23, 2008, Walt Jocketty was named the general manager of the Cincinnati Reds after Wayne Krivsky was fired.
After the 2010 season, Jocketty was named Sporting News Executive Of Year.
In 2010, Walt Jocketty was named the Executive of the Year in MLB.
After the 2015 season, Walt Jocketty was named to the position of president of baseball operations.
On December 27, 2016, Walt Jocketty was named executive advisor to the CEO.
