Apple Intelligence

Apple Intelligence is an AI system by Apple Inc., unveiled at WWDC 2024 and integrated into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. It utilizes both on-device and server processing for tasks. Launched for developers and testers in U.S. English on July 29, 2024, with a phased release starting October 28, 2024, and a full launch planned for 2025. Support for additional English-speaking regions and other languages like Chinese, French, and Spanish is slated for December 11, 2024, and April 2025, respectively, with a launch in the European Union also scheduled for April 2025. Apple Vision Pro support is expected in April 2025.

2022: Generative AI Development

In late 2022, the rapid development of generative artificial intelligence and the release of ChatGPT reportedly blindsided Apple executives and forced the company to refocus its efforts on AI.

July 2023: Internal LLM Creation

In July 2023, it was first reported that Apple was creating its own internal large language model, codenamed "Ajax".

October 2023: Generative AI Feature Development

In October 2023, Apple was reportedly on track to release new generative AI features into its operating systems by 2024, including a significantly redeveloped Siri.

February 2024: AI Investment Announcement

In an earnings call in February 2024, Apple CEO Tim Cook stated that the company was spending a "tremendous amount of time and effort" into AI features that would be shared "later that year".

June 10, 2024: Apple Intelligence Announcement

On June 10, 2024, Apple Intelligence was announced at WWDC 2024 as a built-in feature of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. The AI system relies on both on-device and server processing.

July 29, 2024: Developer Beta Launch

On July 29, 2024, Apple Intelligence launched for developers and testers in U.S. English, with the iOS 18.1, macOS 15.1, and iPadOS 18.1 developer betas.

October 28, 2024: Partial Release in Developer Betas

On October 28, 2024, a partial release of Apple Intelligence occurred within the iOS 18.1, macOS 15.1, and iPadOS 18.1 developer betas.

December 11, 2024: Expanded Language Support

On December 11, 2024, support for localized versions of English in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and South Africa was added to Apple Intelligence.

December 2024: BBC Complaint Over Notification Errors

In December 2024, the BBC sent a complaint to Apple over its notification summary feature falsely stating the BBC News app to have reported that Luigi Mangione had killed himself.

January 2025: Further BBC Complaints

In January 2025, the BBC followed up its complaint highlighting further incorrect summaries of its stories, such as announcing that Luke Littler had won the PDC World Darts Championship hours before the final, and that "Brazilian tennis player" Rafael Nadal had come out as gay, a story that was in reality about Brazilian player João Lucas Reis da Silva.

February 21, 2025: Apple Vision Pro Support Announcement

On February 21, 2025, Apple announced that Apple Intelligence would bring support to Apple Vision Pro in April of the same year.

April 2025: Expansion and Rollout Plans

In April 2025, Apple Intelligence is set to start rolling out in the European Union. Additional language support for Chinese (simplified), English (India), English (Singapore), French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, and Vietnamese is also planned.
