Clinton Portis is a former NFL running back who played for nine seasons, most notably with the Washington Redskins. He played college football at the University of Miami before being drafted by the Denver Broncos in 2002. His seven seasons with the Redskins were highlighted by an average of 81.2 rushing yards per game, a feat that earned him recognition as one of the 80 Greatest Redskins by a panel of celebrities.
Portis became the second true freshman running back to start since the 1975 season.

In 2001, Portis and the Miami Hurricanes won the National Championship. He also had his best season, rushing for 1,200 yards and 10 touchdowns.
On December 15, 2002, Portis became the youngest player to score four touchdowns in a game.

In May 2007, during investigations into Michael Vick's dog-fighting activities, Portis defended Vick, claiming it was his right to do with his dogs what he wanted. He later retracted these comments.

On December 9, 2008, Clinton Portis publicly criticized Washington Redskins coach Jim Zorn on the radio, expressing frustration over inconsistent messages and his reduced playing time after being removed from a game against the Baltimore Ravens.

On December 1, 2009, Clinton Portis consulted a specialist in Pittsburgh for concussion-like symptoms following a hit during a game against the Atlanta Falcons. He had lost consciousness during the game and missed the next four because of the injury.

In 2010, Clinton Portis rejoined coach Mike Shanahan in Washington but his season was hampered by abdomen and groin injuries, limiting him to five games and 227 rushing yards. He did score two touchdowns in a September game against the Houston Texans.

On February 28, 2011, the Washington Redskins released Clinton Portis after unsuccessful contract negotiations and recurring injuries. Portis later commented on the team's decline in passion since Joe Gibbs' retirement.
Clinton Portis announced his retirement from the NFL on August 21, 2012, ranking 27th all-time in career rushing yards. He was also named to the 80 Greatest Redskins of All Time.
In 2013, Clinton Portis joined other former NFL players in a lawsuit against the league concerning concussion and head injuries, having admitted to suffering 10 concussions himself.
On April 10, 2014, Clinton Portis was inducted into the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame.
