In 1993, the idea for Clueless originated as a television pilot at Twentieth Century Fox, aiming for a show about cool teenagers, inspired by the positive character of Jeff Spicoli from Fast Times. Amy Heckerling, after reading Jane Austen's Emma, decided to write the script around an Emma-like character set in Beverly Hills.
