1993: Clueless Originated as a TV Pilot

In 1993, the idea for Clueless originated as a television pilot at Twentieth Century Fox, aiming for a show about cool teenagers, inspired by the positive character of Jeff Spicoli from Fast Times. Amy Heckerling, after reading Jane Austen's Emma, decided to write the script around an Emma-like character set in Beverly Hills.

November 21, 1994: Principal photography began

On November 21, 1994, principal photography for Clueless began. The filming schedule consisted of 40 days. Brittany Murphy, who was 17 at the time, required a parent or guardian present during filming.

July 19, 1995: Clueless Opened in Theaters

On July 19, 1995, Clueless opened in 1,653 theaters and grossed $10,612,443 on its opening weekend, ranking second at the US box office behind Apollo 13. This box office success brought Alicia Silverstone to international attention.
